California gas prices have climbed to eye-watering levels, with one rural county emerging as one of the most expensive fuel markets in the United States.
Mono County, a remote area in eastern California just west ofYosemite National Park, is seeing average prices close to seven dollars per gallon, according to AAA data. That compares with a statewide average of $6.114 per gallon and a national average of $4.457.
The surge places California at the top of the national rankings for fuel prices, with other expensive areas includingSan Franciscoat around 6.30 dollars, San Diego at 6.10 dollars, and Los Angeles Long Beach also near 6.10 dollars.
By comparison, as of Monday morning,California’saverage prices for regular gas stood at $6.114, while the National Average was $4.457. The second-highest gas prices in the country are in Hawaii, where the average is $5.639 per gallon.
Mid-grade average gas prices in California were $6.332, Premium $6.530, and Diesel $7.502.

There are several reasons for California’s stunning prices. For one, not only do residents face a steep 71-cent-per-gallon tax on gasoline, but the state has also had to rely heavily on imported gas since two refineries closed last year.
Further, California has strict environmental regulations on gas that focus on reducing emissions through fuel standards and a transition to zero-emission vehicles. Hence, the state heavily restricts the use of methanol in standard gasoline, prioritizing ethanol as the primary oxygenate. While the move is often celebrated by environmentalists, it also makes gas more expensive to refine, which reflects in Americans’ pockets.
