US President Donald Trump has congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on what the White House described as a “historic, and decisive election victory” inWest Bengal, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a breakthrough win.
“Just last month on their phone call, President Trump expressed to Prime Minister Modi his admiration and how lucky India is to have him as its leader. The President congratulates Prime Minister Modi on this recent, historic, and decisive election victory," said White House spokesman Kush Desai.
The election results mark a historic political shift in West Bengal, with the BJP securing a decisive mandate and ending the long-standing dominance of the Trinamool Congress.
The BJP ousted Trinamool Congress from power in Bengal by winning 207 seats and captured power for the third time in a row in Assam in the results of the assembly polls declared on Monday.
The BJP has won three of the five states that recently held assembly elections.
The party’s biggest victory came in West Bengal, where it secured power by defeating the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC), which had been seeking a fourth consecutive term. The result marks a major political shift, as the BJP had limited presence in the state earlier. The party also retained power in Assam and Puducherry, winning a strong mandate in both.
In Kerala, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) won a clear majority, securing 100 seats in the 140-member assembly. The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) was reduced to 35 seats.
In Tamil Nadu, actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), delivered a major upset by defeating Chief Minister MK Stalin’s Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member assembly.
These results are politically significant. When the BJP first came to power at the Centre in 2014, it governed only eight states. With these latest wins, the party is now in power in 18 states.
