Actor-turned-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chiefVijayhas expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for congratulating him on his party’s strong performance in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Taking to social media, Vijay acknowledged Prime Minister Modi’s message and emphasised that governance and public welfare would remain his priority. He also signalled a willingness to work with the Centre for the state’s development.

"Thank you, Hon'ble PM Narendra Modi for your greetings. The well-being of our people remains our only goal. Transcending politics, we shall focus on the State's progress and the welfare of people of Tamil Nadu. We look forward to the Union Government's support in this endeavour," Vijay said in a post on X, replying to the prime minister.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier congratulated Vijay and his party for their “impressive performance,” while reiterating the Union government’s commitment to Tamil Nadu’s progress and welfare.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also reached out to Vijay, congratulating him on TVK’s results and describing the mandate as reflective of a rising youth voice in Indian politics.

Responding to Rahul Gandhi's wish, Vijay said, "My sincere thanks to the Honorable Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha for the call and kind wishes! We shall remain committed to excellence in public service, and preserving the cultural ethos of our state which requires collective cooperation. Beyond politics, we shall prioritise for the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu."

Vijay’s TVK has emerged as the single largest party in the state in its electoral debut, marking a major disruption to Tamil Nadu’s long-standing political landscape dominated by the DMK and AIADMK.

This will be the first time in Tamil Nadu that a party will assume power a little over two years after its founding in February 2024. The TVK has clocked nearly 35 per cent (34.92) vote share in its debut polls. Vijay himself has won from both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East constituencies. As he vacates one of the seats, the effective tally of TVK will come down to 107, until by poll is held.

Vijay wrote to Lok Bhavan, staking a claim to form the government. He informed the Governor that the party had secured 108 seats, and being the single largest party, it should be invited to form the government. "We request an opportunity to demonstrate our majority," Vijay had said in an e-mail communication to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, a source in the TVK said.
