The focus has shifted to government formation in Tamil Nadu a day after the counting of votes.Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party by winning 108 seats in the 234-member legislative Assembly. But, the TVK is still short of majority.

This will be the first time in Tamil Nadu that a party will assume power a little over two years after its founding in February 2024. The TVK has clocked nearly 35 per cent (34.92) vote share in its debut polls. Vijay himself has won from both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East constituencies. As he vacates one of the seats, the effective tally of TVK will come down to 107, until by poll is held.

Vijay wrote to Lok Bhavan, staking a claim to form the government. He informed the Governor that the party had secured 108 seats, and being the single largest party, it should be invited to form the government. "We request an opportunity to demonstrate our majority," Vijay had said in an e-mail communication to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, a source in the TVK said.

Vijay has reportedly asked for two-week time to prove the majority on the floor of the Assembly House

Another possible scenario could be that TVK forges a post-poll alliance.

One option is a broad coalition with the Indian National Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Indian Union Muslim League, Communist Party of India, and Communist Party of India (Marxist).

A second configuration could see TVK align with Congress, Pattali Makkal Katchi, CPI, CPIM and IUML, though VCK is unlikely to join any front that includes PMK.

A third possibility under consideration is a tie-up between TVK and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, notably without the BJP, indicating a potentially significant realignment in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.

Scenario 1 - TVK + Cong, VCK, IUML, CPI, CPIM

Scenario 2 - TVK + Cong, PMK, CPI, CPIM, IUML (VCK will not join the same alliance as PMK)
