Christian Brueckner, the prime suspect in theMadeleine McCanndisappearance, has vanished in northernGermanydespite being under strict police surveillance and electronic monitoring following his prison release. The 48-year-old has not been reliably located in recent weeks after a period of drifting between temporary accommodation, shelters and improvised campsites around Kiel. Authorities say he is required to wear an electronic ankle tag and remains under activepolicesurveillance, but his exact whereabouts are currently unknown.

Brueckner was released from Sehnde prison in September 2025 after serving most of a sentence for the rape of an elderly woman in Portugal. Since then, he has led a transient existence across northern Germany, rarely staying anywhere for long. Former police officer Jim Gamble said: “I would be concerned regardless of his status as a suspect in the Madeleine McCann case because he's proven that he's a dangerous individual who targets the young and the most vulnerable in our society.”

He initially settled in Kiel before being moved into state-provided housing in Neumünster when he reportedly ran out of money, reportedThe Telegraph. His arrival there triggered a strong backlash from residents on a housing estate largely made up of young families, with a nearby children’s play area. Tensions escalated after his address was circulated online, prompting protests and concerns from locals who said they feared for their safety.

One resident at the time said: "People were afraid to let their children play outside", adding there were worries he could be hiding in communal areas such as cellars. Brueckner was eventually escorted away by police.

After being removed from Neumünster, Brueckner moved between motels and woodland camps near Kiel. By late 2025 and into early 2026, he was understood to be living in a makeshift tent covered by a large gazebo, roughly 30 minutes from the city centre. To maintain his anonymity, he reportedly relies on a secret network of "helpers" who deliver food and basic supplies to his various campsites, allowing him to remain undetected by the public.

In November last year, an ITV News crew encountered him at the woodland site. When asked about Madeleine McCann, he became hostile, shouting at journalists and knocking away a microphone without responding to questions. He is also reported to have moved his tent on at least two occasions to avoid media attention. On another occasion, he travelled to Braunschweig in an attempt to confront prosecutors investigating the McCann case, but was refused access.

In March 2026, Brueckner tried to resettle in a private flat in Braunschweig, but local protests forced him to leave again. Since then, there has been no confirmed sighting. Reports suggest that he may be attempting to return to the Algarve, the region where Madeleine vanished in 2007. Mr Gamble added: “And given his nomadic lifestyle, it's going to be all but impossible to mitigate that risk through a management regime.”

German prosecutors named Brueckner in 2022 as their key suspect in the disappearance of three-year-old Madeleine McCann, who vanished from Praia da Luz in Portugal in May 2007. They believe she is dead, but have not publicly presented conclusive evidence linking him to her disappearance. Regarding the evidence, Mr Gamble said: “It's the circumstantial evidence that surround him, the proximity. He lived within a mile of the crime when the crime occurred.”
