The sudden death of Malayalam actor Santhosh Nair has drawn attention to a critical medical chain that many people underestimate: how physical trauma can escalate into a fatal cardiac arrest. While these events may seem unrelated, severe injury can set off a cascade of physiological reactions that overwhelm the body within minutes.
Nair died this morning following a road accident in Adoor, Kerala. Even though he was rushed to a private hospital, the 65-year-old suffered a heart attack. His wife, who was with him when his car collided with a truck, is currently undergoing treatment.

Trauma refers to any serious physical injury - such as a road accident, fall, or blunt force impact which can have devastating consequences. In extreme cases, trauma can disrupt vital organs, cause internal bleeding, or impair oxygen supply. When the heart suddenly stops pumping effectively, it leads to cardiac arrest - a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate intervention.
Unlike a heart attack, which is caused by blocked blood flow, cardiac arrest is an electrical malfunction of the heart. However, trauma can indirectly trigger it through multiple pathways.
According to doctors, the events can make trauma lead to a cardiac arrest or a heart attack, including:
Heavy internal or external bleeding reduces the body’s blood volume, starving the brain and heart of oxygen. Without rapid treatment, this can quickly result in cardiac arrest.
Trauma to the head can disrupt brain signals that regulate breathing and heart rhythm, increasing the risk of sudden cardiac failure.
Doctors say injuries affecting the lungs or airway can limit oxygen intake. Low oxygen levels strain the heart, potentially leading to arrest.
