More than eight million Thermos-branded travel mugs have been hit with an urgent recall notice, after a number of customers sustained serious injuries and even permanent blindness.
The alert was issued by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, which cautioned that a dangerous fault could cause the travel mug's lid stopper to fly off violently when opened. According to safety officials, pressure can build up inside the container upon opening, forcing the stopper out with considerable force.
The fault stems from several models lacking a pressure relief function.
The manufacturer has received at least 27 reports of incidents in which consumers were struck by the ejecting stopper, with some victims suffering cuts and impact injuries requiring medical attention.
The recall states: "Three consumers suffered permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye.", reports the Mirror.
The recall affects two widely popular product ranges: Stainless King food jars and Sportsman food and beverage bottles. In total, approximately 5.8 million food jars and 2.3 million bottles are affected.
The impacted products were sold in major US retailers, including Walmart and Target, as well as online through Amazon. All items were sold between March 2008 and July 2024, typically retailing at around $30.
Specific models covered by the recall include the Stainless King Food Jars (16oz SK3000 and 24oz SK3020) manufactured before July 2023, and the Sportsman Food and Beverage Bottles (40oz SK3010). The affected products were available in a variety of colours and carried the Thermos logo on the side, with the serial or model number located on the base of the container.
Owners of any of the recalled Thermos products are being strongly urged to cease using them immediately and to get in touch with Thermos directly to obtain a free replacement. Depending on the model, customers may be required to dispose of the stopper and submit photographic evidence, while others will need to return the item using a prepaid shipping label. The products were manufactured in China and Malaysia.
Anyone with concerns or queries is advised to contact Thermos directly for further guidance, either via its website or customer support line.
