The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for hailstorm and thunderstorm activity over parts of Delhi and Haryana in the next two hours, with gusty winds expected to reach speeds of 40 to 60 kilometres per hour.
Areas likely to be affected include Narela and Bawana in Delhi, and Gohana, Gannaur, Sonipat and Kharkhoda in Haryana. Lightning has also been forecast for these areas.
A western disturbance that is expected to remain active from Monday to Wednesday brought clouds over Delhi-NCR overnight, followed by light to moderate rainfall in several areas. Most parts of the city also experienced strong winds along with the showers.
The IMD has also released its monthly outlook for May 2026, predicting above-normal rainfall across India. On temperatures, the department said maximum temperatures are expected to remain normal to below normal across many parts of the country during the month.
However, the IMD cautioned that despite the overall rainfall projections, some regions may still face heatwave conditions.
"During May 2026, maximum temperatures are expected to be normal to below normal across many parts of the country," the IMD said in a statement issued by the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay indoors and avoid open spaces during the storm.
