The steady beat of taiko drums, the swirl of lion dancers and the aroma of street food from across Asia will fill the waterfront at North Hempstead Beach Park later this month as thousands gather to celebrate culture, community and tradition at the Town of North Hempstead’s annual Asian American Festival.
North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena and the Town Board announced the festival will take place Saturday, May 16, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
The beachfront event will highlight traditions from countries including China, India, Japan, Korea, Pakistan, Afghanistan and the Philippines. Performances and activities are set to include Japanese taiko drumming, Chinese lion dances, Indian henna tattooing and Korean traditional games.
“North Hempstead’s rich cultural tapestry will be on full display at North Hempstead Beach Park, so join us at the beach for a fun, educational, and dynamic celebration of our incredible diversity,” DeSena said.
Organizers said the festival will also feature a lively market, arts and crafts and a variety of food offerings from local restaurants, drawing thousands of attendees.
The event is part of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, officially proclaimed in North Hempstead for May 2026. The town has held the festival annually since 2010 to celebrate its diverse Asian communities.
Parking fees at the beach park are $10 per vehicle for cash and $7 for credit or debit cards. More information is available by calling 311 or (516) 869-6311.
