The United Kingdom has raised its national terrorism threat level from “substantial” (an attack is likely) to “severe” (an attack is highly likely). This is the second-highest level on the scale and the first time it has reached “severe” in over four years.

In the threat level notice,MI5,the United Kingdom’s domestic counter-intelligence and security agency, referenced the recent stabbing of two Jewish men in North London.

The Gateway Pundit reportedthe two men were stabbed by a Muslim extremist in front of a Synagogue in London.

Images show the attacker targeting the men without provocation.

This change follows the stabbings in Golders Green on 29 April, although it is not solely a result of that attack. The UK has been experiencing a gradual increase in terrorist threats for some time. This has been driven by a rise in both Islamist and Extreme Right-Wing terrorist threat from individuals and small groups in the UK.

The current terrorist threat is characterised by:

A significant volume, breadth and complexity of terrorist incidents and cases across various ideologies, including attack planning, extremist travel intent, and online and offline radicalisation.

Whilst Islamist Terrorism remains the primary threat to the UK, Extreme Right-Wing Terrorism (ERWT) has been on a steadily rising trajectory.

An elevated threat to Jewish and Israeli individuals and institutions, in the context of the conflict in the Middle East, evident in recent incidents in the UK and overseas.

While the UK National Threat Level set independently by JTAC reflects the terrorist threat in the UK, we are also seeing a sustained and significant tempo of State-linked threats including to Jewish and Israeli individuals and institutions.
