As counting trends in theKerala Assembly electionspoint towards a possible shift in political mood, early indications suggest a strong resurgence for the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). Several constituencies considered CPI(M) strongholds are witnessing tight races, with senior leaders and ministers of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) trailing in multiple seats. While it is signalling a potential anti-incumbency wave, the result has brought the ruling alliance to its possible worst-ever performance.

If current trends of just 34 Seats for LDF and a century for UDF are to be believed, it will bring the ruling alliance down from its worst position in 2001, when it went down to just 40 seats.

LDF and UDF have been the major blocs in the southern state since the 1980 Assembly elections , when they came into being. Since then, the state has seen alternative government between the two fronts, with just one exception of the 2021 elections, when the LDF made a return in the state, pushing the Congress-led UDF to its lowest tally of 40.

The results also indicate that the LDF’s repeated claim that there was no anti-incumbency failed to convince voters. Despite welfare schemes, infrastructure projects and financial assistance programmes, a section of the electorate appears to have voted for change after nearly a decade of Left governance.

Issues such as inflation, unemployment, farmer distress and local environmental concerns further added to the anti-incumbency sentiment. Meanwhile, allegations linked to the Sabarimala gold theft controversy also created undercurrents of discontent, even if they were not central to campaigning.

Together, these factors suggest a broader realignment of voter sentiment, with the UDF emerging stronger in what appears to be a closely watched electoral battle.
