A prediction made more than a year ago by political strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor is drawing renewed attention as counting trends emerge in Tamil Nadu. In March last year, shortly after the formation of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Kishor was asked in an interview about the prospects of the party and its founder, actor Vijay.
"Vijay's commitment is to go alone. I don't see that changing. If he goes alone, he stands a very good chance to win Tamil Nadu," he said during the interview withThanthi TV.
When it was pointed out that winning would require at least 118 seats in the 234-member assembly, Kishor doubled down. "Yes, absolutely. Keep this video and play it when the results come out in Tamil Nadu," he added.
At the time, such assessments were met with scepticism. That sentiment persisted even in late April this year, when a pollster projected that the TVK could win between 98 and 120 seats — a forecast that was brushed off given that the party was making itselectoral debut under a leaderwith no prior political experience.
However, early trends from counting appear to have lent weight to those projections. As of 3 pm on Monday, Vijay was leading in 100 constituencies, defying most exit polls that had predicted a return to power for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Chief Minister MK Stalin.
Kishor’s remarks have since circulated widely on social media, with supporters pointing to them as evidence of an early reading of shifting political currents in the state.
There have been reports that I-PAC, the political consultancy founded by Kishor, may have worked with the TVK during the campaign. But he denied any formal advisory role in the same interview. "We have been more like friends than political associates. We spoke to each other for the first time five years ago... I am not a political adviser to him. We have shared values," he said.
Kishor’s own political party, the Jan Suraaj, did not win any seats in the Bihar assembly elections last year.
With counting still under way, the final result remains uncertain. But the early trends — and the renewed focus on Kishor’s prediction — have already added an unexpected dimension to the political story in Tamil Nadu.
