Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam entered the electoral arena with an expansive welfare-driven manifesto, targeting women, farmers and the youth ofTamil Nadu, and early trends suggest those promises have resonated with voters. The party pledged a monthly assistance of Rs 2,500 for women, financial support for unemployed youth, loan waivers for farmers, and even proposed a dedicated ministry for artificial intelligence. In its maiden electoral contest since its launch in February 2024, TVK is leading in 109 seats in the 234-member Assembly, emerging as a significant political force.

Vijay, one of the state’s most popular film stars, described the manifesto as being rooted in the principles of the Thirukkural by Thiruvalluvar—aram (virtue), porul (wealth), and inbam (joy), which he said should guide governance. At the launch, he emphasised “honest administration” as the party’s core ideology, positioning TVK as an alternative to the incumbent government led by MK Stalin.

The 95-page manifesto places a strong emphasis on welfare. For women, it promises Rs 2,500 per month for heads of families up to 60 years of age, six free LPG cylinders annually, dedicated safety mechanisms, and special courts. Additional measures include financial support for girls’ education, incentives for self-help groups, and symbolic benefits tied to marriage and childbirth.

For students and young professionals, TVK has proposed collateral-free education loans of up to Rs 20 lakh, unemployment allowances, and stipends for those undergoing skill training. The party also plans to generate employment through initiatives such as the “CM People Service Associate” programme, aimed at hiring five lakh youth at the grassroots level.

Industry incentives also feature prominently, with proposals to encourage companies to hire local workers through tax and electricity rebates.

Farmers form another key focus area. The manifesto promises waivers on cooperative crop loans based on landholding size, higher minimum support prices for key crops, and financial aid for tenant farmers and agricultural labourers through a cultivator rights framework.

On governance, TVK has proposed a “Right to Service Act” to ensure timely delivery of public services, along with mechanisms for direct citizen participation in legislative processes. It also promises to review the Old Pension Scheme, regularise long-term temporary employees, and implement transparent administrative policies.

For police personnel, the party has proposed salary hikes and additional allowances to address the demands of the force.

With a strong welfare pitch and a focus on governance reforms, Vijay’s political debut appears to be gaining traction, particularly among urban and younger voters, marking a notable shift in the state’s political landscape.
