MI signed Sachin Tendulkar as their icon player before the IPL 2008 mega-auction and bestowed him with the captaincy. Sachin-led MI played their first IPL final in 2010, where they lost to Chennai Super Kings. He left captaincy before IPL 2012. Harbhajan Singh replaced him.

Ricky Ponting replaced Harbhajan as captain before IPL 2013. Rohit Sharma was picked for the top job after Ponting left captaincy and dropped himself from the playing XI during the season.

Rohit did wonders in his debut season and captained MI to their maiden IPL title win. Rohit-led MI emulated their success in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. In 2020, they became only the second team, after CSK, to win back-to-back IPL titles.

Ahead of IPL 2024, MI brought back Hardik Pandya from Gujarat Titans via trade and handed him the team's charge. Pandya-led MI finished in the 10th spot in the IPL 2024 points table.

The five-time IPL Champions crashed out of IPL 2025 after losing to Punjab Kings in the second qualifier. With only two wins in 9 matches, MI are reeling in the ninth spot in the IPL 2026 points table.

India's T20 World Cup winners, Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, play under Pandya's captaincy in IPL. Rohit has missed the majority of matches in the season due to a hamstring injury.
