Tension briefly flared near the strong room at Asansol Engineering College in West Bengal after a switched-off mobile phone was allegedly found inside an envelope along with documents linked to the Raniganj Assembly constituency. According to reports, the incident led to a commotion outside the strong room premises, where mobile phones are strictly prohibited. A BJP leader alleged that an attempt was made to take the phone inside the secured area.

A BJP leader said, "Someone was trying to enter here with a mobile phone. Our men caught him. Mobile phones are forbidden. I don't know what the police are doing. A mobile phone was being taken inside, so we stopped it, and that's why we're standing here. We won't allow any unethical act here. All the officers are of TMC..."

Amid the developments, West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal assured that all arrangements are in place for a smooth counting process on May 4.

"The counting of votes will be conducted in a free and fair manner. We are fully prepared; there will be no unrest anywhere. Tomorrow's counting will take place peacefully," Agarwal told reporters.

The Election Commission also said that preparations have been completed across constituencies in the state, including the Mekhliganj Assembly Constituency in Coochbehar district. In a post on X, the Election Commission said, "All Set for Counting Day. Counting arrangements are all set at Mekhliganj Higher Secondary School, the designated counting centre for 1-Mekhliganj AC under Coochbehar district."

Counting of votes will begin at 8:00 am on May 4, starting with postal ballots, followed by EVM counting from 8:30 am. The results will be updated in real time on ECINET and the official election portal. The results for Assembly elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry will be declared on May 4.
