The Herricks High School jazz program recently brought its signature sound to the national stage, traveling to Philadelphia on April 18 to perform in the prestigious National Jazz Festival. The event, held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, featured premier high school jazz programs from across the East Coast, providing a high-level platform for student-musicians to showcase their technical skill and artistic expression.

Both the Herricks Blue Band and Herricks Vocal Jazz performed full sets for a panel of distinguished adjudicators. A highlight of the festival was the opportunity for students to receive direct, professional feedback from members of the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors. These expert clinicians provided the ensembles with invaluable insights into performance dynamics and jazz theory, further enriching the district’s music education curriculum.

Individual excellence was also a major theme of the day, as two Herricks students received specialized recognition for their improvisational talents. Isabella Marzo and Joshua Mathew were both awarded medals by the judging panel, specifically honoring their outstanding work as solo improvisers during their respective sets.

Beyond the competitive stage, the trip offered a cultural immersion into the heart of Philadelphia. Students spent time exploring the historic Reading Terminal Market and the vibrant Chinatown district in Center City, allowing them to experience the local atmosphere of one of the nation’s most historic musical hubs.

This successful trip underscores Herricks’ commitment to providing students with experiential learning opportunities that extend well beyond the classroom.
