The Mineola High School band room was transformed into a professional rehearsal hall on April 27 as student-musicians participated in a high-level masterclass with world-renowned composer and conductor Brian Balmages.

The intensive session offered the school’s Wind Ensemble a rare opportunity to work directly with the artist behind the music they are preparing for the stage. Under the direction of Chris Toomey and Zach St. John, the ensemble engaged in a deep dive into musical interpretation, technical nuance and the creative process.

The rehearsal served as the final preparation for the ensemble’s performance at the LIU Post Honor Ensemble concert on April 29. Having the composer on the podium allowed students to receive immediate feedback on the specific articulations and emotional depth required to bring the score to life.

This collaboration provided a unique perspective on professional artistry, bridging the gap between classroom practice and the professional stage.
