As part of their recent social studies unit, John Lewis Childs School fifth graders participated in an in-depth research project on European explorers. Each student was assigned a historical figure, such as Samuel Champlain, Hernán Cortés, Marco Polo, Hernando de Soto or Giovanni da Verrazzano, and worked collaboratively in pairs to create a digital book using Book Creator.
Their projects highlighted each explorer’s background, motivations for exploration, travel routes, discoveries, settlements and the modern-day regions connected to their journeys.
In addition to the digital component, students also expressed their learning creatively. Individually, they designed detailed illustrations of their explorer and completed paper ship templates filled with key facts, including destinations, major accomplishments and the year of each voyage.
