8th Pay Commission Update:The Central Government periodically sets up the Central Pay Commission (CPC) every decade to review and revise salaries, pensions, and allowances for its employees. The upcoming 8th Central Pay Commission is expected to play a crucial role in reshaping pay structures, including changes to dearness allowance (DA), fitment factor, and retirement benefits. Announced in January last year, the commission’s Terms of Reference were finalised in November.

Since then, anticipation has been building over potential salary increases, arrears, and pension-related adjustments.

The decisions of the 8th CPC are expected to impact nearly 50 lakh central government employees, including defence personnel, as well as about 65 lakh pensioners. If projections hold, the minimum basic salary could see a significant jump, from Rs 18,000 to Rs 51,480.

However, the exact increase will differ based on the employee’s level within the pay matrix. With 18 distinct levels, both current employees and retirees may experience varied revisions depending on their existing basic pay.

Who Are The Key Members Of The Panel?

The commission is headed by former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, who brings decades of legal experience. She began her legal career on 30 July 1973 and was elevated as a Supreme Court judge on 13 September 2011. Before this role, she served as Chairperson of the Press Council of India until 16 December 2025.

Other prominent members include Pulak Ghosh, a finance professor and member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, and Pankaj Jain, a former IAS officer who is serving as Member-Secretary.

The CPC consults a wide range of stakeholders, including employee unions, ministries, labour groups, and pension organisations. Inputs gathered through these discussions are analysed to determine salary structures, pension formulas, and various allowances.

The commission has already initiated formal consultations, inviting memorandums and holding discussions during March and April 2026. It has also indicated that further meetings will be conducted across different states and union territories “in due course” over the coming months.
