The US government withdrew an updated list of Chinese companies allegedly supporting Beijing’s military just hours after it was posted on Friday. The revision had added some of China’s largest firms, includingAlibabaand Baidu. The link to the Pentagon’s 1260H list on the Federal Register was replaced with a “withdrawn” notice roughly an hour after publication. About an hour after being published, the Pentagon’s 1260H list on the US Federal Register was replaced with a ‘withdrawn’ notice.
"An agency letter requesting withdrawal of this document was received after placement on public inspection," the Federal Register posted in an editorial note, without providing a reason.
While the list does not formally sanction Chinese companies, a new law bars the US government from contracting or procuring from firms included on it in the coming years. Updating the list could strain relations with Beijing, following the trade truce reached by China’s Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump in October. Trump is expected to visit China in April, although official dates for the trip have not yet been announced.
Other additions on Friday included automaker BYD, biotech firm WuXi AppTec and AI-driven robotics company RoboSense Technology Co. Ltd, while chip memory manufacturer YMTC was removed.
Being added to the list also signals the Pentagon’s assessment of these firms to US government contractors and other agencies. Some of the companies have challenged their inclusion in court.
An Alibaba spokesperson stated there is no basis for its listing and warned of potential legal action, saying, “Alibaba is not a Chinese military company nor part of any military-civil fusion strategy.” The list already features major Chinese corporations, including tech giant Tencent Holdings and battery maker CATL, a key player in the electric vehicle industry.
