The high-stakesAssam electionnow heads to results day on May 4, when counting across all 126 assembly seats will decide whether the BJP secures a third consecutive term or if the Congress stages a comeback in a state it once dominated. At the center of the BJP's campaign is incumbent chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who remains the party's most prominent face in the state. The Congress, meanwhile, is banking on Gaurav Gogoi, son of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi, to lead its challenge on the ground.

Assam’s electoral map spans 126 constituencies across four key regions, the Brahmaputra Valley, Barak Valley, hill districts, and the Bodoland Territorial Region, each presenting a distinct political contest shaped by local dynamics.

Voting, held in a single phase on April 9, saw participation from a diverse electorate. Communities including Assamese voters, Bengali-speaking and Assamese Muslims, tea tribes, and indigenous tribal groups are expected to play a decisive role in determining outcomes across different pockets of the state.

From the politically significant Jalukbari, long considered a stronghold of Sarma, to Jorhat, where the Congress is looking to consolidate its base, several constituencies across the state are set to be closely watched.

As counting day approaches, the spotlight remains firmly on key battlegrounds that could ultimately tip the balance of power in Assam.

Nazira: A constituency dominated by tea gardens and the oil sector, Nazira has been a family stronghold of the late chief minister Hiteswar Saikia, having been represented both by him and his wife Hemoprava Saikia, who was a minister in the Tarun Gogoi government. It is currently held by their son and Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, Debabrata Saikia, who will try to retain it for the fourth consecutive term in the upcoming polls.

Golaghat: A constituency with several tea gardens under its ambit, Golaghat is currently represented by the state’s first woman finance minister, Ajanta Neog, who holds the record of being the longest-serving female legislator in the state, with five consecutive terms since 2001.
