A massive fire tore through a four-storey residential building in Vivek Vihar in the early hours of Sunday (May 3), leaving at least nine people dead and several others injured, according to an official police statement. The blaze, which spread rapidly across multiple floors, triggered a massive rescue operation involving fire services, police, and disaster response teams. The blaze erupted in a house located within the building, with the second floor reported to be the worst affected. Thick smoke and flames spread rapidly, prompting the deployment of several fire tenders to contain the situation.

According to police, a PCR call regarding the fire was received at around 03:48 am at Vivek Vihar Police Station. Police teams, including the SHO and ACP of Vivek Vihar, rushed to the spot along with the fire brigade and crime teams at the premises in Vivek Vihar Phase I.

Officials found that the fire had engulfed flats on the second, third, and fourth floors of the building. During rescue and firefighting operations, around 10 to 15 people were evacuated from the premises. Two individuals who sustained minor injuries were shifted to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital for treatment.

A total of 12 fire tenders were deployed at the site, along with personnel from the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, traffic police, and local police. Preliminary enquiry has confirmed that nine people lost their lives in the incident, while further investigation and search operations are ongoing.

Deputy Commissioner of Police for Shahdara District, Rajendra Prasad Meena, confirmed the casualties and ongoing efforts. "Fire broke out in a house in a four-story building in Vivek Vihar, with casualties on the second floor. So far, 3-4 bodies have been found, and the search for the remaining remains is ongoing. We're still searching. We'll let you know once the search is complete."

Another resident, Rohit, suggested a possible cause, saying, "A blast in the AC triggered the fire... Around 12-15 were rescued. However, 4-5 people are still missing. The fire started at around 03:13 am... Fire tenders arrived at around 3:35 am... Efforts are being made to extinguish the fire..."

Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the blaze. Search and cooling operations are still underway as officials continue to assess the full extent of the damage and casualties.
