Ruturaj Gaikwad created history after leading the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to their fourth win of the season after the five-time champions thrashed Mumbai Indians (MI) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday (May 2) with an eight-wicket victory with 11 balls to spare. The Super Kings completed a league double over their arch-rivals with two thumping victories after a record 103-run victory at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium last week.
Gaikwad won the Player of the Match (POTM) award as he scored his second half-century in as many games to put a poor start to the season behind him. The 29-year-old did not make a single score of 50 or more runs in the first seven games of the season before breaking the drought against Gujarat Titans (GT) in their previous fixture.
Ruturaj made 67 runs in just 48 balls while staying unbeaten in a knock that included five boundaries and two sixes with a strike rate of 139.58.
Gaikwad leapfrogged MS Dhoni with his 24th fifty-plus score for the Super Kings. The CSK skipper now has the second-most scores above the 50-run mark for the Chennai-based franchise across all competitions. Only Suresh Raina is above the star opening batter in the elite list.
Most 50+ Scores For CSK In All Competitions
Meanwhile, Ruturaj now also has the third-most runs for the Super Kings in the IPL. He has scored 2747 runs for the franchise in the world's richest league. He went past Faf du Plessis (2721 runs). Only Raina (4687) and Dhoni (4865) are ahead of him.
Meanwhile, this was Gaikwad's fourth score of more than 50 runs against MI. Among CSK players, only Raina (6) has more. Dhoni, Faf, S Badrinath, and Dwayne Smith had reached the milestone three times while playing against the Men in Blue and Gold. It is also the most by an opener for the franchise.
