The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday directed that fresh polls shall be conducted in all the 285 polling stations, including Auxiliary polling stations, in West Bengal's 144-Falta Assembly Constituency. The repolling will take place between 7 AM and 6 PM on May 21 2026, and the result will be declared on May 24.

According to ECI, they have issued these directives "on consideration of severe electoral offences and subversion of the democratic process during the polling in a large number of polling stations on April 29, 2026 in 144-Falta Assembly Constituency, West Bengal".

It is rare for the poll authority to order a re-election in an entire Assembly seat.

EC ordered repoll in Falta seat hours after re-election in 15 polling stations of two Assembly seats in West Bengal -- Diamond Harbour and Magarhat Paschim, concluded on Saturday, May 2 (today).

The West Bengal Assembly polls were held in two phases on April 23 and April 29. The counting of votes for the remaining seats is scheduled to be taken up on May 4.

Falta is the same assembly constituency in West Bengal where the BJP symbol on an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) was found covered with a tape. A video from a particular polling booth had also gone viral on social media, after Bengal phase 2 election on April 29, when voters flagged the matter, informing authorities that the BJP symbol and button on the EVM were covered with a tape.
