The national capital saw a rise in temperatures on Saturday, just two days after light to moderate rainfall had brought some relief from the heat. However, residents may not have to brace for a heatwave anytime soon, with rain and thunderstorms expected over the next few days.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Sunday and Monday, warning of light rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across the city.

At Safdarjung, the city’s main weather station, the minimum temperature was recorded at 25.9°C on Saturday—3.1 degrees higher than the previous day and slightly above normal. The maximum temperature reached 38.6°C, which, while still below the seasonal average, marked an increase from Friday.

Other parts of the city reported similar trends. Palam recorded a maximum of 38°C, while minimum temperatures rose across Lodhi Road, Ridge, and Ayanagar, reflecting a general upward shift.

According to IMD officials, very light to light rainfall is likely on Sunday, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and winds reaching speeds of 30–40 km/h, with gusts up to 50 km/h. Similar weather conditions may continue into Monday.

Weather experts say a fresh western disturbance is set to affect north India in the coming days, which will keep temperatures in check. Mahesh Palawat of Skymet said the system could bring light rain and prevent heatwave conditions in the city for at least the next week.

Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality stayed in the “moderate” category. The 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 144 on Saturday evening, slightly higher than Friday’s reading of 120, according to the Central Pollution Control Board.

Forecasts suggest the AQI is likely to remain in the moderate range over the coming days.

Under CPCB standards, an AQI between 101 and 200 is considered “moderate,” indicating acceptable air quality but possible discomfort for sensitive groups.
