Welcome to the first leg of the Triple Crown — the 2026Kentucky Derby! Horse racing fans (and those intrigued by peak fashion choices) will gather once more at Churchill Downs for the 152nd “Run for the Roses,” as 19 three-year-old horses will take the track in hopes of securing the coveted rose garland at the close of the 1 1/4 mile run.
This year, thefavorite to win it all is bay colt Renegade, coming off back-to-back wins at the 2026 Arkansas Derby and Sam F. Davis. He’ll be jockeyed by Irad Ortiz Jr. from the No. 1 post — an unfortunate draw, as thelast horse to win from the No. 1 post was Ferdinandback in 1986.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Puma, one of the favorites for Saturday’s Run for the Roses, has been scratched from the Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs officials confirmed on Saturday.
“We discovered some swelling in his leg due to a skin infection,” trainer Gustavo Delgado said. “It’s incredibly disappointing, but the swelling should go down within a day or two. It’s just really bad timing.”
The Puma is being treated with antibiotics and should be fine to resume training soon.
