In a major setback for the Trinamool Congress, the Supreme Court on Saturday refused to interfere with the Calcutta High Court regarding the deployment of central officials. The TMC had challenged the Calcutta High Court order that dismissed a petition against the Election Commission's (EC) directive to deploy central government and PSU employees for counting the votes polled in the West Bengal Assembly election. Polling for the 294-member Assembly was held in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4.
The Supreme Court upheld the Election Commission’s decision to appoint only central government and PSU employees as counting supervisors.
“All these may be central govt employees. But now they are under ECI, why you have apprehensions? Also your counting agent will be there. Not only of your party but all parties. Why your perception that employees of state govt has different intelligence,” the Supreme Court said.
The high court dismissed the TMC's petition on Thursday, saying there was no illegality in the poll panel's decision to appoint counting supervisors and assistants from central government and Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) employees, instead of the state government staff.
