Foreign Minister Cho Hyun held a phone call with his Azerbaijani counterpart Wednesday and discussed regional developments and ways to enhance bilateral cooperation, the foreign ministry said.
During the talks with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, Cho expressed gratitude for Azerbaijan's support and assistance in evacuating Korean nationals from the Middle East last year amid escalating tensions there, according to the ministry.
In June last year, tensions between Iran and Israel raised fears of a broader conflict, prompting the evacuation of dozens of Koreans from parts of the region.
Cho asked for continued attention and cooperation from the Azerbaijani side in ensuring the safety of Koreans in light of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.
The two ministers also shared the view on the importance of developing mutually beneficial relations and agreed to further strengthen cooperation in areas such as high-level exchanges and substantive collaboration, the ministry added.
