The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea has endured and withstood more than any other nation on earth. Despite millions killed during the Korean War, a horrendous embargo, the imposed crisis of the 1990s Arduous March period, and constant threats and provocations from the United States, the Korean Workers’ Party maintains the loyalty of the population and has emboldened them to achieve many great accomplishments. North Korea has launched its own satellites, pioneered its own cellphone and computer technology, wiped out illiteracy, and more recently seen a blitz in the construction of modern housing.

The DPRK’s record of international solidarity, despite being blockaded and forced into isolation by imperialists, is also substantial. North Korea’s recent statements of support for the Palestinians are just the latest in decades of support for resistance to Zionism. North Korea supported and honored the Black Panther Party in the United States in its struggle against racism and FBI repression. North Korea is currently standing with Russia and the peoples of the Donbas republics on the battlefield against NATO-backed forces.

As working people in the United States observe the decline of our infrastructure, the perpetuation of unpopular wars to serve globalist monopolies, and the collapse of the United States into a low-wage police state, many are realizing that the narratives we have been given to justify sanctions and threats of war against various countries are false. Furthermore, many Americans are realizing that it is necessary to build some kind of popular, anti-imperialist movement here to oppose imperialism and its drive toward war.

Under such circumstances, it makes sense that Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Il, and Kim Jong Un may have something to teach us. The fact that the DPRK has withstood so much opposition, yet practiced dramatic construction and industrialization at home and international solidarity around the world, indicates strong understanding and organizational prowess. The American Juche Study Group will dig into the ideology of self-reliance that has held the DPRK together and examine it from the perspective of American workers.
