Donald Trump's approval rating has fallen to its lowest level of his current term, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll, amid growing public concern over the cost of living and the US conflict with Iran. The four-day survey, completed on Monday, found that 34% of Americans approve of the president's performance, down from 36% in a previous poll conducted between 15 and 20 April.
Trump's standing has trended downward since he returned to office in January 2025, when 47% of respondents said they approved of his performance. The latest poll suggests his popularity has been affected by economic pressures and foreign policy challenges, particularly following the US and Israeli military action against Iran on 28 February.
Only 22% of respondents said they approved of Trump's handling of the cost of living, down from 25% in the previous survey.
US gasoline prices have risen by more than 40% since the start of the conflict, reaching around $4.18 per gallon. The increase follows disruptions to global oil supplies, with roughly a fifth of trade affected. The price rises have placed additional strain on households and raised concerns among Republicans about their prospects in November's congressional midterm elections.
While 78% of Republican respondents said they still support Trump overall, 41% expressed disapproval of his handling of living costs.
Among independent voters, who are often seen as decisive in elections, Democrats held a 14-point advantage when respondents were asked which party they would support in congressional races. The poll found 34% backed Democrats, compared with 20% for Republicans, while one in four remained undecided.
Trump's approval rating on the economy stands at 27%, lower than at any point during his first term in office from 2017 to 2021, and below the weakest economic ratings recorded by his predecessor, Joe Biden.
Approval of the US conflict with Iran has also declined, with 34% expressing support, compared with 36% in mid-April and 38% in mid-March. Although fighting has eased following a ceasefire agreed earlier this month, ongoing tensions and threats to shipping in the Persian Gulf continue to affect global energy markets.
Most responses to the poll were collected before a shooting at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner on Saturday night, where a gunman was stopped before reaching a hall where the president was dining. Federal prosecutors have charged the suspect with attempting to assassinate Trump.
During his first term, Trump's approval rating hovered around 40% for extended periods. The latest figure remains slightly above his previous low of 33%.
