An emotional scene unfolded at Venice Beach Tuesday as three rescuedsea lion pups were released back into the ocean— drawing cheers from a crowd that had gathered to witness their return to the wild.
Heartwarming video showed the trio — Mogul, Bronze and Missouri — as they emerged cautiously from individual carriers, hesitating for a moment before instinct took over.
The pups huddled close together, briefly wrapping around one another, before slowly making their way toward the shoreline at the Venice Fishing Pier. After sliding into the water, onlookers who had been asked to remain quiet until the animals reached the ocean broke out in applause and cheers.
Once in the surf, the pups could be seen swimming side by side, riding the waves and gradually heading toward deeper waters.
“It is really special to see our community gathered like this today,” said John Warner, CEO of the Marine Mammal Care Center Los Angeles.
The three pups each arrived at the Marine Mammal Center after being separated from their mothers too early tosurvive on their own.
Mogul was found near Marina del Rey being repeatedly pushed off a dock by waves off while underweight and vulnerable. Bronze, rescued from Redondo Beach, was found similarly malnourished and alone. Missouri was discovered severely emaciated on a jetty, with his ribs visibly protruding.
All three were initially tube-fed before learning to eat fish on their own, gaining strength over several weeks of care. By the time of their release, each had grown strong enough to compete for food and survive independently in the wild.
Local city Councilwoman Traci Park called the moment “really remarkable.”
“Today we are not only releasing three sea lion pups — we are witnessing the full arc of rescue rehabilitation and return to the wild.”
