John “Jack” Aicher of Southold died April 22, 2026. He was 95 years old.

Born to Charles and Anne Aicher, he grew up in Queens and attended Catholic grammar school, where he enjoyed playing stickball. His family later moved to Rockville Centre when he was in eighth grade, and he attended St. Agnes. He graduated from Chaminade High School in 1948 and St. Bonaventure University in 1952, where he studied English and served in ROTC, earning a commission upon graduation as a second lieutenant. He served 11 years in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of captain after serving as a forward observer during the final armistice of the Korean conflict. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Ribbon and the Korean Service Medal, and was inducted into the St. Bonaventure ROTC Hall of Fame in 2018.

During his college years, he met Anne Mulhern, and they later married and shared 69 years of marriage. He took the LSAT in Seoul, South Korea, and was admitted to Fordham Law School, graduating in 1957. He was admitted to the New York state bar and the Vermont state bar, and practiced as a partner in the law firm Aicher, Moffett & Aicher for the majority of his professional career.

His family said he was deeply influenced by the Franciscan Friars at St. Bonaventure, which fostered a lifelong devotion to the general welfare of others. He counseled prisoners incarcerated throughout New York City, served as a volunteer arbitrator in the New York state court system, donated pro bono legal services to Suffolk County residents being evicted from their homes, served on the Vermont State Reparative Board, and served on the board of trustees of Molloy College, now Molloy University. After raising their children in Rockville Centre, he and his wife moved to Mendon, Vermont, in 1991, and later moved to Southold in 2003. In Southold, he volunteered for the food pantry, sang in local choirs and served as a lector at St. Patrick Church. He also published his memoir, “Footprints,” recounting milestones in his life. His family said he was an avid cross-stitcher and a dedicated Catholic.

He was predeceased by his wife Anne, his sister, Jeanne, and his brother, Tom.

He is survived by his children, Beth (Bill), Patty (Steve), Eileen (Enrique), John (Stacey) and Anne; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 28, from 4 to 7 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, April 29, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church in Southold, officiated by the Rev. Abraham Thannickal.
