Herricks School Board President Juleigh Chin said she is running for the Nassau County Legislature, seeking to unseat incumbent Scott Strauss in the 9th District for a second time.
The 9th Legislative District encompasses East Williston, Floral Park, Garden City Park, Herricks, Manhasset Hills, Mineola, New Hyde Park, North Hills, North New Hyde Park, Searingtown and Williston Park. The election will take place on Nov. 3.
“Everything I’ve done in my life has led me to this point,” Chin said. Originally from Pittsburgh, she said her involvement in Parent Teacher Associations at her kids’ school has led to her being on the school board for over 13 years.
She ran against Strauss in November 2025 for the same seat, losing after receiving about45% of the vote.
Chinhas worked in education, administration and local government for her whole career and currently manages community outreach and volunteer services at North Shore University Hospital.
She said infrastructure is central to her platform and that she wants to efficiently address Nassau’s roadwork and flooding problems. She said potholes should be a high priority, and the county can do more to prevent flooding and sinkholes as storms become more severe.
She said her time in school leadership has taught her about fiscal responsibility and budgeting using taxpayer money.
“We really work hard to get as much as we can out of our tax dollars,” she said, adding that Herricks homeowners carry more of the load of its tax levy because of the higher rates of business taxpayers. “We are fiscally responsible to our taxpayers, to our homeowners and to our community.”
Her opponent said he is focused on a different set of issues.
Strauss, a former NYPD officer and Mineola mayor, is seeking his second term in the county Legislature and said crime and taxes are his main focuses. He said police are becoming the targets of social commentary, with people posting officers’ faces and information online.
