Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had another record-breaking outing in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) as he continued his red-hot form for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh on Tuesday (April 28). The 15-year-old broke a spectacular record that Andre Russell held for seven years.

The Royals opener walked out to open the innings for RR as they attempted to chase a big total of 223. He gave the Riyan Parag-led side a dream start as they posted 84 runs in the powerplay. Sooryavanshi was the top contributor with a knock of 43 runs in 16 balls before he was dismissed by Arshdeep Singh on the second ball of the fourth over. His knock came at a strike rate (SR) of 268.75 and included three boundaries and five sixes.
Through the course of his innings, Sooryavanshi regained the Orange Cap and became the first player to complete 400 runs this season. The teenager has scored 400 runs in nine innings at an SR of 238.09 with two half-centuries and one century to his name. He has has smashed 34 boundaries and 37 sixes this season.
Sooryavanshi took just 167 balls to reach the landmark, which is the quickest anyone has done it in the league's 19 seasons. Overall, there have been 229 instances of a player making over 400 runs in an IPL season, but no one has done it quicker than the 15-year-old prodigy.
The record previously belonged to Andre Russell, while Abhishek Sharma was the fastest Indian before the Royals star. Sooryavanshi is only the fourth player to complete 400 runs in a season before facing 200 balls.
Fastest To 400 Runs In An IPL Season (By Balls)
Sooryavanshi has also become the first teenager in the IPL's history to score over 400 runs in a season. Saurabh Tiwary (2010), Mandeep Singh (2012), Shreyas Iyer (2015), Rishabh Pant (2018), and Devdutt Padikkal have managed to achieve the rare feat.
Among teenagers, Mumbai Indians star Tilak Varma (397 runs in 2022) held the record for the most runs in an IPL season previously. Pant (366 runs in 2017), Prithvi Shaw (353 runs in 2019), and Sanju Samson (339 runs in 2013) are the only other players to hit over 300 runs in an IPL season before celebrating their 20th birthday.
Sooryavanshi's tally of 37 sixes this season is already the joint-fifth most by an Indian behind Abhishek Sharma (42 in 2024), Shreyas Iyer (39 in 2025), Virat Kohli (38 in 2016 and 2024), and Suryakumar Yadav (38 in 2025). Rishabh Pant also scored 37 maximums in the 2018 season.
