After temperatures crossed the 42-degree Celsius mark inDelhiover the past few days, it might rain in the national capital today (Tuesday), as predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The met department has issued 'orange' and 'yellow' alerts for thunderstorms, dust storms and rain in different parts of Delhi on Tuesday.
An 'orange' alert, which means "be prepared", has been sounded for southwest Delhi, with authorities warning of thunderstorms accompanied by winds reaching up to 60 kmph, along with the possibility of lightning and brief spells of rain.
A 'yellow' alert has been issued for parts of northwest Delhi, west Delhi, north Delhi, south Delhi and southeast Delhi, signalling the likelihood of thunderstorms and gusty winds, while advising residents to remain cautious.
Similar conditions are expected in the next two hours in parts of Haryana, including Hansi, Meham, Sonipat, Tosham, Rohtak, Kharkhoda, Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri, Matanhail, and Jhajjar. The India Meteorological Department said isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall, with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30–40 kmph), is likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi during April 28–30 and May 2–4.
Experts said the nationalcapitalshould also brace for dust storms in the coming days, attributing the changing conditions to a cyclonic circulation prevailing over central Pakistan and adjoining regions of Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab.
The system, according to experts, is likely to transport dust from the desert regions of Rajasthan towards Delhi.
The changing weather pattern is expected to bring short-term relief from heat but may also result in sudden changes in wind conditions and air quality across the city.
Meanwhile, for Wednesday (April 29), the IMD has issued a yellow alert for tomorrow, with the city expected to see one or two spells of light rain along with strong winds reaching up to 50 kmph.
This weather change is likely to bring down the maximum temperature to below 38 degree Celsius. While the minimum temperature will be around 27 degrees Celsius. "Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning, strong surface winds," the IMD stated.
