Lucknow:The Election Commission’s police observer for the West Bengal Assembly polls phase 2, IPSAjay Pal Sharma,is embroiled in a controversy after his video issuing a warning to Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan’s family went viral. Sharma, also now as ‘UP’s Singham’ is currently deployed in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas. After Sharma’’s video went viral, the TMC slammed the cop; however, the Bharatiya Janata Party came in support of him.
Sharing the video, the BJP said, “Ajay Pal Sharma, the encounter specialist and Singham of UP Police, is deployed as police observer of South 24 Parganas. He just read the riot act to Bhaipo’s henchman Jehangir Khan’s family members. Nobody can stop this election from being the most free and fair election in 50 years, and anyone who dares to act oversmart will be taught a lesson.”
Meanwhile, the TMC slammed the Election Commission for Sharma’s deployment. “Ajay Pal Sharma was brought in by the Election Commission as the police observer of Diamond Harbour. He is known as an encounter specialist, and he is the same man who, along with CRPF forces, is barging into people's houses in the middle of the night, terrorizing the people of Diamond Harbour, and in the name of searching, he is assaulting women along with CRPF forces,” A TMC spokesperson said in a press conference. The Mamata Banerjee-led party also threatened to lodge an FIR against the IPS officer.
TMC MP Mahua Moitra also shared purported videos, in which a man was seen dancing with women. Moitra claimed that the man in the video was Sharma. “Fair & lovely Babua @DripsAjaypal - good to see you enjoying yourself FantaCop style. Stay Thanda Thanda Cool Cool. Bengal is always Trinamool,” the TMC MP said in her X post.
Ajay Pal Sharma is a 2011 batch IPS officer. He belongs to the UP cadre and is currently posted as Additional Commissioner of Police in Prayagraj. Sharma was born in October 1985 in Punjab's Ludhiana. For his tough policing style, he was also known as “”UP Singham”. He reportedly led several sensitive operations during his posting in several districts of Uttar Pradesh, including Noida and Shamli. He is well known as an "encounter specialist.”
He was a dentist by profession before joining the police services. He grabbed headlines in 2018 after he caught a rape and murder accused following an encounter.

However, the TMC accused Sharma of being involved in a cash-for-postings racket during his posting in Rampur. The Samajwadi Party even accused him of conducting a “fake encounter” of alleged criminal Akbar in 2020 in Shamli.
