Kolkata:A video of Uttar Pradesh Indian Police Services (IPS) officer Ajay Pal Sharma issuing a warning to the family ofTrinamool Congress(TMC) Bhangor candidate Jahangir Khan on Monday during his visit to the area. Notably, Sharma, also touted as UP’s Singham, is posted as the Election Commission's observer in West Bengal. During his visit to the constituency, he was also accompanied by Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel. The viral video sparked a controversy.
In the viral clip, the IPS officer could be heard warning people not to create a ruckus during the polling in the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections. Pointing towards the members of Khan’s family, Sharma said, “Jahangir's family members are standing here; tell him properly—we're repeatedly getting reports that his people are issuing threats; we'll take strict action over it. Don't end up crying and regretting later.”
Notably, the TMC candidate had reportedly left his home 36 hours before the polling of the second phase. He threatened to file an FIR in the matter. “We will file an FIR and go to court,” Khan said as quoted by The Time of India.
The raid was conducted following complaints that the TMC candidate was threatening voters in the area, reported TOI, citing EC sources.

The TMC slammed the election commission over the video. The Mamata Banerjee-led party accused the poll panel of being biased.
“Ajay Pal Sharma was brought in by the Election Commission as the police observer of Diamond Harbour. He is known as an encounter specialist, and he is the same man who, along with CRPF forces, is barging into people's houses in the middle of the night, terrorizing the people of Diamond Harbour, and in the name of searching, he is assaulting women along with CRPF forces,” TMC spokesperson Naredra Pratap said in a video message. The TMC also threatened to lodge an FIR against the IPS officer.
