Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Election Results LIVE: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured wins in several wards of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation elections in Ahmedabad. The party’s full panel won in Chandkheda, Asarwa, Nava Vadaj and Vejalpur wards. In Sardarnagar ward, BJP candidates registered a victory by around 1,000 votes.
Meanwhile, Congress candidate and former corporator Rajshree Kesari faced defeat in the polls.
Counting of votes is underway for 192 seats of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation across 48 wards in Ahmedabad. Out of these, two seats, Vasna and Thaltej, have already been won unopposed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In the elections, BJP fielded 190 candidates, while the Indian National Congress (Congress) nominated 185 candidates and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) fielded 151. A total of 877 nominations were rejected and 22 candidates withdrew from the race.
Senior leaders also participated in voting. Union Home Minister Amit Shah cast his vote along with his family, including his son Jay Shah, at a polling booth in Narayanpura. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also voted in Ahmedabad.
The last civic elections in 2021 saw BJP win a clear majority with 159 out of 192 seats. Congress had won 25 seats, while All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) secured 7 seats, and one seat went to an independent candidate. BJP has been in power in the civic body since 2005.
The Gujarat local body elections were held on April 26, covering 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats and 260 taluka panchayats. Around 9,992 candidates are contesting in this large-scale election.
The State Election Commission had made security arrangements at around 48,000 polling stations to ensure smooth voting.
The contest is multi-cornered, with BJP, Congress, AAP and AIMIM in the fray.
