US-Iran talks appear to be inching toward a breakthrough, after days of stalemate. While peace talks remain stalled after Iran refused direct talks and US President Donald called off Envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner’s Islamabad trip, backchannel diplomacy has kept the process alive. Now, Iran has reportedly offered to end its chokehold on theStrait of Hormuz.

A proposal was presented by Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi during his visit to Oman and Pakistan during the weekend that is designed to break the deadlock, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

According to the report, Iran has agreed to open the Strait of Hormuz if;

1. The US lifts its blockade on the country and its ports

2. If it ends the war in the Middle East

3. If the discussions on Tehran's nuclear programme are pushed to a later phase of the diplomatic process.

However, US officials told The New York Times that President Trump and his national security team are sceptical of Iran's offer.

The proposal was first reported by Axios and latercarriedby this publication. According to the report, Iran has given the United States a new proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and end the conflict.

The new proposal focuses on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, after US lifts the naval blockade, and demands to postpone the nuclear negotiations for later stages.

It also suggests that the ceasefire, which US President Donald Trump has increased indefinitely, should be extended for a longer period or the parties would agree on a permanent end to the war.
