Jerry.K, a respected figure in Korea’s indie hip-hop scene, has died after a prolonged battle with brain cancer. He was 42.

According to his family, the rapper — born Kim Jin-il — died Monday after fighting glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain tumor, for about two years.

Born in 1984, Jerry.K graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in communications. He debuted in 2001 as part of the rap duo Loquence alongside fellow rapper Makesense, marking the beginning of a career that would help shape Korea’s underground hip-hop movement.

He later became an original member of the influential hip-hop collective Soul Company, gaining recognition for his lyricism and socially conscious themes. As a solo artist, he steadily built his reputation, particularly with his 2008 full-length album “Ma Wang,” which brought him wider attention.

In 2011, he founded the independent label Daze Alive Music, further cementing his role as a key architect of Korea’s indie rap ecosystem. His third album, “Reality, Enemy,” won Best Rap & Hip-Hop Album at the Korean Music Awards, while the title track, “Call Center (feat. Oohyo),” from his fourth album was nominated for Best Rap & Hip-Hop Song at the same awards.

His most recent release was the 2020 album “Home,” a project that reflected themes of recovery and everyday peace.

A funeral altar has been set up at Severance Hospital Funeral Hall in Seoul. The funeral procession is scheduled for Wednesday.
