Google co-founder Sergey Brin warned that California is moving toward socialism as he escalates opposition to a proposed tax on billionaires.

According toThe New York Times, Brin has spent about $57 million in recent months backing efforts to defeat the measure, which would impose a one-time five percent tax on billionaires.

These efforts have included funding political groups opposing the measure and coordinating with other wealthy donors.

“I fled socialism with my family in 1979 and know the devastating, oppressive society it created in the Soviet Union,” Brin said in a statement.

“I don’t want California to end up in the same place.”

He has also shifted his primary residence to the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe ahead of a December deadline tied to the tax, while continuing to spend time in California.

Brin has become one of the largest individual political donors in California this election cycle, directing funds through various nonprofits.
