Students from Sousa Elementary School, Weber Middle School and Schreiber High School performed Thursday, April 24, at the district’s Night of Jazz in the Paul D. Schreiber High School auditorium.

Shaw, an alto and soprano saxophonist and bandleader, won the Rising Star Alto Saxophone category in the 2014 DownBeat Critics Poll. He is a member of the Roy Haynes Quartet and has performed and recorded with artists including Tom Harrell, Christian McBride, Jason Moran, the Mingus Big Band, Pat Metheny, Stefon Harris, Roy Hargrove, Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Jimmy Cobb.

“Not only did the students have an opportunity for this wonderful collaboration, but they also performed for one another,” Director of Creative Arts Kevin Scully said. “This helps set the foundation for what they can experience as they grow as musicians.”

The concert featured the Sousa Elementary School Jazz Band, directed by Christian Crawford; the Weber Middle School Jazz Lab Ensemble and Jazz Band, directed by Jenna Leen; and the Schreiber High School Jazz Ensemble, directed by Christian Crawford.
