Cole Tomas Allen, the 31-year-old accused of storming security at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, has been formally charged with attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump. During his initial appearance in federal court, Magistrate Judge Matthew J. Sharbaugh outlined three charges against Allen:
Allen was informed of his right to legal counsel, with public defenders Tezira Abe and Eugene Ohm appointed to represent him. Prosecutors are seeking to keep him in custody, and a detention hearing has been scheduled for April 30.
Authorities allege Allen arrived armed and forced his way through security at the high-profile event in Washington, DC. During the hearing, he told the court he holds a master’s degree in computer science. Investigators are also reviewing a message believed to be linked to the suspect.
Responding to the incident, President Trump said he initially “wasn’t worried” when gunfire was heard, but quickly realized the seriousness of the situation alongside First Lady Melania Trump.
In the aftermath, the United States Secret Service, the Department of Homeland Security, and White House officials are expected to review security protocols for major events. Officials have not ruled out changes to future scheduling, including whether Trump and JD Vance should avoid attending the same events simultaneously.
