James Van Der Beek, best known to many for his role in Dawson’s Creek, never lived to see his 50th birthday. He succumbed to a battle with cancer, passing away this week at the age of 48.
Like so many other guys, he was accustomed to defining himself by the things he does. His role as an actor. As a husband. As a father. As a provider.
All of that changed when he was hit with a diagnosis that made him unable to fulfill the various ‘doings’ by which he had come to define himself.
That battle with cancer forced him to reflect on life’s big and most existential questions.
He shared the answer he arrived at in this video.
James Van Der Beek passed away today.

He was special, he was 48 years old, a Father of six, a Husband. He was man who spent his final chapter teaching the ultimate guide to real life.
