Acute Kidney Injury, or AKI, is a common yet often overlooked condition that can develop suddenly and affect how your kidneys function. It is frequently linked to multiple underlying causes, making it a serious concern in modern healthcare. With rising cases globally, awareness about acute kidney injury causes, symptoms, and prevention is more important than ever.
Acute Kidney Injury refers to a rapid decline in kidney function, leading to the accumulation of waste products and fluid imbalance in the body. It can occur in various clinical situations and may range from mild dysfunction to severe kidney failure.
“If we look at some examples, Acute Kidney Injury can be due to diarrhea and dehydration. When the body loses fluids, it directly impacts kidney function and can lead to injury. Another important cause is obstruction to kidney flow. If kidney flow is obstructed, then it can be due to kidney stones and prostate-related issues. These conditions block the normal passage of urine and can result in kidney damage,” said Dr. Hemal Shah, Consultant Nephrologist at Saifee Hospital.

According to Dr. Shah, AKI does not have a single cause. Instead, it develops due to a combination of factors affecting kidney health. “One of the major challenges today is that there is no specific test to diagnose Acute Kidney Injury. There is no single investigation that can clearly confirm the condition, which makes early diagnosis difficult,” he said.
Severe diarrhoea, vomiting, or excessive sweating can lead to dehydration, reducing blood flow to the kidneys and causing injury.
Conditions like kidney stones or prostate enlargement can block urine flow, leading to pressure buildup and kidney damage.
Certain drugs, including painkillers and antibiotics, can harm kidney function if used improperly or for prolonged periods.
Kidney infections or severe systemic infections can directly impair kidney performance and trigger AKI.
