The Great Neck Library announced its upcoming summer art exhibition, “Swim or Fly,” featuring a collection of sculptures by award-winning local artist Dr. Suzanne Posner. The exhibit will run from May 1 through July 31 at the Main Library, located at 159 Bayview Avenue.
The sculptures will be integrated into the library environment, displayed atop the bookshelves within the Main Library’s Reference Study Area. The public is also invited to attend a special art reception to meet the artist on Saturday, June 6, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Main Library’s Front Lobby.
Posner, a direct carver who has worked with stone for 30 years, describes her creative process as one of discovery and adaptation.
“Making art is joyful,” Posner said. “I am a direct carver, often starting a piece without knowing what the subject will be or changing the subject after starting. I try to take the unexpected as an exciting challenge and continue the work with grace. I hope to bring joy to viewers with beautiful shapes and brilliant color.”
A Great Neck native, Posner’s path to professional artistry followed a successful career in dentistry. After graduating from Bryn Mawr College and the University of North Carolina, she practiced dentistry in New York City while refining her craft at the Art Students League and the New School.
Following a diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease in 2011, Posner retired from dentistry to dedicate her time to sculpting, painting, and teaching. She currently teaches stone sculpture at the Cumberland School in Great Neck. Her work is held in private collections across the United States and she maintains active memberships in the Art Students League and the National Art League.
The exhibition is free and open to the public during regular Main Branch library hours. For more information, please visit the Great Neck Library website or contact the Main Branch at 159 Bayview Avenue.
