Kolkata:The high-decibel campaign for the crucial second phase of the 2026West Bengal Assembly Electionsconcluded at 6 PM on Monday, bringing down the curtain on weeks of intense political mobilisation across the state. Top leaders from all major parties made a final push to sway voters ahead of polling scheduled for April 29, covering 142 constituencies in what is widely seen as a decisive phase of the election.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the Bharatiya Janata Party’s last-minute blitz with multiple rallies across key districts, expressing confidence that the party would form the next government. He also asserted he would return to the state for the oath-taking ceremony after results are declared on May 4.
On the other side, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee continued her grassroots-style campaigning, including direct outreach to voters in local markets, signalling the Trinamool Congress’s focus on voter connect in the final stretch.
Senior leaders including Amit Shah and Yogi Adityanath also intensified attacks on the ruling party, sharpening the political narrative around governance, law and order, and identity issues.
The campaign’s closing hours were marked by heightened tensions and sporadic violence. Clashes between rival party workers were reported in parts of North 24 Parganas, leaving several injured and underlining the high stakes of the contest.
The Election Commission of India has stepped up monitoring, including action against officials in earlier phases, to ensure free and fair polling amid the charged atmosphere.
The two-phase election, held on April 23 and with the second phase scheduled for April 29, will determine the fate of all 294 assembly seats, with results set to be announced on May 4.
With high voter turnout already recorded in the first phase and an aggressive, polarised campaign reaching its peak, the focus now shifts to polling day, where voters will decide the outcome of one of the most closely watched electoral battles in the country.
