The decomposing body of a 39-year-old woman dietician was recovered from a cement-filled wooden box in Surat, sending shockwaves across the city. Her husband has been detained in connection with the case. As per the police, the accused - identified as Vishal Salvi - killed his wife Shilpa on April 20. He tried to erase all evidence of the crime by sealing her body inside a wooden box at his old house in Salabatpura. He even tried to mislead the police by filing a missing person's complaint at the Godadara police station.
The police said that Salvi was later tracked down to the outskirts of the city and arrested.
As per the police, Shilpa worked as a dietician at SMIMER Medical College and Hospital. The couple, married since 2010, have two children aged 13 and 18.
The police said that it was the couple's son who shared Salvi's letter - in which he had confessed to the crime - with a relative via WhatsApp. In the letter, Salvi claimed that his marriage had been peaceful initially, but had turned for the worse later, with continuous arguments between the Salvi and his wife. In the letter, he also disclosed the location of the body.
Investigators say that the murder must have followed a domestic quarrel, likely over Salvi's unemployment.
Shilpa’s father, Pradip Kosta, said that he grew suspicious when he could not reach her the next day. When he contacted Vishal, he was told she had gone to the hospital and not returned. Alarmed, Kosta travelled from Chhattisgarh to Surat and confronted his son-in-law before approaching the police.
Salabatpura police inspector R A Jadeja said, "Based on the letter, police reached the first floor of the old house mentioned by the accused and found a body inside a wooden box. Cement had been poured over it in an attempt to conceal it. As the incident was five days old, the body was decomposed."
While domestic discord is believed to be the trigger, police said they are still probing the exact motive and whether anyone else was involved in the killing or the attempted cover-up.
