Kim Jong-un's bond with his daughter Kim Ju-ae has come under fresh scrutiny as questions grow overNorth Korea's future leadership. The closely watched interactions between Kim Jong-un and Kim Ju-ae have again stirred speculation, just weeks before key political gatherings where succession talk could intensify.
A report from Tokyo-based outlet Daily NK Japan described a recent public display of affection between the pair as 'unusual', pointing to footage from a New Year's performance in Pyongyang.
Observers said the leader and his daughter appeared unusually close, fuelling debate over whether the appearances reflect a carefully staged succession narrative or something deeper within the secretive regime.
The episode has drawn renewed attention asSouth Korea's intelligence agency recently told lawmakers that Kim Ju-ae, believed to be around 13, has likely entered the stage of formal successor designation. Her increasingly visible presence at high-profile state events has prompted analysts to reassess the leadership dynamics inside Pyongyang.
At the New Year's celebration broadcast by state television, Kim Ju-ae was seated between Kim Jong-un and his wife Ri Sol-ju. The report, translated byKorea JoongAng, says that throughout the performance, she was seen holding her father's hand and whispering to him, openly displaying their closeness.
The pair 'engaged in what could be described as excessive physical contact throughout the event', with some officials reportedly appearing uncomfortable or avoiding eye contact.
The report highlighted a moment during the countdown to 2026, whenKim Ju-aestood up, placed her hand on her father's face and kissed him on the cheek. Kim Jong-un responded with a broad smile.

The outlet noted this was not the first time their interactions had drawn comment. At a hotel completion ceremony in December, the pair reportedly stood unusually close 'like a couple', prompting negative reactions among some North Korean observers who described the scene as 'disgusting' and 'beyond a normal father-daughter relationship'.
The report concluded that such behaviour 'appears to go beyond a rational attempt to stage a succession narrative, instead reflecting distortions and anxieties inherent in the North Korean system itself'.
