The National Investigation Agency has registered a case to probe the recovery of 79 crude bombs inpoll-bound West Bengal, escalating concerns over security ahead of the second phase of assembly elections. Officials, as per a report by PTI, said the move followed a directive from the Union Home Ministry, which directed the central agency to take over the investigation from local police.

The case was originally filed at Uttar Kashi police station under the Bhangar division in Kolkata on Saturday before being handed over to the NIA. An agency spokesperson confirmed the development, stating, "The case pertains to the recovery of 79 crude bombs and other incriminating materials by Kolkata police, which were being stored at a spot, thereby endangering human life and property."

The explosives were recovered during a raid carried out by Kolkata Police at a residence in Bhangar in South 24 Parganas district. The search was conducted based on specific intelligence inputs, leading to the seizure of a large number of crude bombs and other materials.

Officials said the poll panel has also made it clear that all such cases involving explosives will be investigated by the NIA. Additionally, senior police officers across the state have been warned against any lapses in maintaining law and order in the run-up to polling.

The first phase of the West Bengal assembly elections was held on April 23, recording a voter turnout of 93.19 per cent. The second and final phase is scheduled for April 29, with counting of votes set for May 4. Bhangar is among the constituencies going to polls in the upcoming phase, making the recovery of explosives a significant concern for authorities monitoring election security.
